Chapter 1: The Garage

I was moved to the garage.

Javier changed the lock on the interior door.

He told the neighbors I had become "unstable" and needed "a quiet space to rest." Gabriela repeated the same story to anyone who asked.

I had no phone, no wallet, no way to reach anyone.

Then Daniel arrived.

He had driven six hours from Cincinnati after getting no answer on my home line for nearly two weeks.

When Javier heard the knock, he must have assumed it was a neighbor, because he didn't bother lowering his voice.

Daniel heard every word through the side gate.

He stepped into the garage, knelt down beside me, and looked at my face for a long moment.

Then he stood up slowly, put his hand on my shoulder, and said in a voice so quiet I almost missed it:

"Dad, don't say anything yet."

He slipped his phone back into his pocket.

The small red light on the screen had already been on for several minutes.
