Chapter 2: Four Words

She was still laughing when the elevator doors opened.
Three people stepped out.
My assistant, Carol, was first.
Behind her came the building manager, and behind him was a man in a dark suit carrying a folder — the inspector I had arranged to meet that morning.
Carol stopped walking the moment she saw me.
"Good morning," she said carefully.
Then she looked at Brittany.
The laughter died.
Brittany's smile didn't disappear all at once.
It faded slowly, the way color drains from a face when the body understands something the mind is still refusing.
Carol stepped forward.
"Mr.
Hayes.
Your eight o'clock is ready upstairs."
I nodded and picked up my clipboard.
Brittany hadn't moved.
Her mouth was still slightly open.
Her eyes moved from Carol to me, then to the building manager, then back to me.
"Wait," she said.
Her voice had changed completely.
"You're actually —"
"The owner," the building manager said quietly.
He didn't look at her when he said it.
I walked toward the elevator.
I didn't hurry.
I didn't look back.
But just before the doors closed, I heard Carol say something to Brittany in a low, steady voice.
It was four words.
I didn't hear all of them.
I only caught the last one.
It wasn't "sorry."
