Chapter 1: The Man They Didn't See

"I was mistaken for a janitor in my own lobby, told to get on my knees and clean, and I let it happen for exactly ninety seconds.

The morning was bright, sunlight sliding across the marble floor of the building that carried my name on its deed.

I had come in early, in my gray suit, with a clipboard in my hand, to check on an inspection nobody had told the staff about.

A cleaning cart stood near the wall, mop and bucket beside it, and I paused next to it to look over a page of notes.

That was when Brittany strode across the lobby in her neon green suit, one hand on her hip, her blonde hair swinging.

She had been hired three weeks earlier.

She had never once looked me in the eye.

"Put the phone down, get on your knees and clean!"

I listened carefully, the way I listen to every complaint, because I like to know exactly who I'm dealing with.

Then I looked up.

"You think I'm maintenance?"

She lifted her chin and laughed softly under her breath.

"People like you should know their place."

I blinked once.

I didn't raise my voice.

I met her eyes and spoke plainly.

"I own this company."

For a second, Brittany went completely still.

Then her mouth twisted, and she burst into loud, hollow laughter.

"Sure you do."

What do you think Brittany's face looked like the moment she found out the truth?
