Chapter 1: The Ring She Said Was Gone

I was fired from my hotel job after a wealthy woman claimed I st*le her $5,000 ring — the next day, a security guard called and said, "You won't believe what she left for you."
I thought things in my life couldn't possibly get any worse.
But apparently, they could.
After my husband died of cancer, I was left drowning in debt from his medical bills while also trying to provide for my 3-year-old twin daughters.
I had no parents or other relatives who could help me.
I worked as a housekeeper at an upscale hotel so I could pay rent on our tiny apartment and keep food on the table.
I valued that job because after bouncing between all kinds of temporary jobs, it was the best one I'd found to help me make ends meet.
But one Tuesday afternoon, my manager called me into the lobby.
There was a woman standing there with her husband.
They had just checked out of one of the rooms I'd cleaned earlier that day.
The woman was dressed head to toe in designer clothes, holding a tiny dog under one arm, and she looked furious.
"My diamond ring is missing," she said.
"It cost five thousand dollars."
She kept insisting that she'd left it on the nightstand beside the bed before going downstairs for breakfast.
I had cleaned their room while they were downstairs eating, but I swear there had been no ring there.
"Ma'am, I'm sorry, but I didn't see any ring.
Maybe you left it somewhere else?" I said.
She crossed her arms over her chest.
"Are you saying I'm lying?
You st*le it from me!"
Honestly, I was shocked.
The manager searched the room but found nothing.
Then he checked the electronic entry log.
After the couple went downstairs for breakfast, my key card was the only employee card used to enter the room.
So I had been the only employee to go inside after the woman supposedly left her ring on the nightstand.
The hallway camera footage seemed to confirm the same thing.
Everything made it look like I was guilty.
"I didn't take anything, I swear," I kept repeating with tears in my eyes.
But the woman threatened to call the police and even post on social media, where she had almost a million followers, about how terrible our hotel was.
Management was clearly so worried about the hotel's reputation that they let me go.
They paid me only for the few days I'd already worked that month.
It wouldn't even cover half the rent.
I went home, hugged my daughters, and just cried.
Losing my income terrified me.
How was I supposed to survive until I found another job?
I cried all night.
The next morning, Marcus called me.
He was one of the hotel's security guards and a good friend of mine.
His voice was shaking.
"You need to come here right now.
I went through the security footage from that day again and again, and I noticed something.
You won't believe what she left for you."
I had no idea what was going on, but Marcus kept insisting that I come immediately.
So I did.
Marcus played the footage, and I went pale.
It wasn't a ring.
It was something that made me want to scream.
