Chapter 2: What the Seams Were Keeping

My hands were shaking as I took the note from Aiden.
The handwriting was Amelia's.
I recognized it immediately.
Those careful, rounded letters she always made.
I started to read.
*"Mama, if you ever find this, please don't be sad.
I hid something because I didn't want you to worry.
But you need to know the truth about what happened to Daddy."*
I stopped breathing.
Aiden put his hand on my arm.
"Keep reading," he said quietly.
*"It wasn't an accident."*
Three words.
That's all she wrote before the note was torn.
The rest was missing.
"Where's the rest of it?" I grabbed the flower.
I squeezed it, turned it over.
Nothing.
Aiden was already checking the other flowers.
One by one.
"There's something in this one too," he said.
He snipped the seam.
Another folded piece of paper.
But when he opened it, his face changed again.
It wasn't more of Amelia's note.
It was a photograph.
A man I didn't recognize.
Standing next to Harold's car.
The timestamp in the corner read the same d@te Harold d*ed.
I looked up at Aiden.
He wasn't looking at the photo anymore.
He was looking at me.
And something in his eyes made my stomach drop.
"How did Amelia know?" I whispered.
He didn't answer.
---
What Amelia knew — and what Aiden is hiding — is more devastating than anyone could imagine.
