Chapter 1: The Flowers She Left Behind

I used the crocheted flowers my daughter made as my wedding bouquet to honor her — then my fiancé noticed a torn seam, pulled out a note, and said, "You won't believe what your daughter wrote."
There was a time when I had a loving husband, a wonderful daughter, and a home.
It felt like I had everything I'd ever dreamed of.
But then everything fell apart.
First, my husband, Harold, d*ed in a car accident.
My daughter, Amelia, and I tried to keep going somehow.
She even taught herself how to crochet to distract herself from the pain of losing her father.
Amelia made the most beautiful little handmade toys.
She crocheted teddy bears, flowers, bunnies, and all kinds of other things.
Sometimes, she'd even set up a little table outside our house and sell them.
Then she'd come home with ice cream and proudly tell me that now she could buy herself all the sweets in the world.
That always made me laugh.
Then Amelia got sick.
We fought for her life in every way we could.
But we couldn't save her.
She was only 13 when cancer took her from me.
My life shattered into pieces.
I'd lost everything.
After that, I wasn't really living.
I was just existing.
I'd go to work, come home, and sit there staring at nothing.
Year after year.
Almost ten years have passed since then.
And the pain still hasn't faded.
But a year ago, I met Aiden.
We met at a coffee shop after I accidentally spilled my coffee on him.
For the first time in a very long time, I allowed myself to let someone into my life again.
Aiden is wonderful, and with him, I actually started to feel a little happy again.
He proposed, and we began preparing for the wedding.
I didn't want a big celebration, but I did want to wear a beautiful dress and carry a bridal bouquet.
So I opened the box where I'd kept all the crocheted things Amelia had made.
I gathered the little handmade flowers she'd created and decided to turn them into my wedding bouquet in her honor.
I don't know, maybe some people would think that's strange.
But I wanted to.
To me, it was the most precious wedding bouquet in the world.
When I took the flowers out, Aiden stepped into the room.
He hugged me and said he completely supported the idea.
Then he picked up one of the flowers Amelia had crocheted and said how beautiful it was.
But suddenly, he went quiet.
He'd noticed an uneven seam on the flower.
It looked as though it had been deliberately opened and then clumsily stitched back together.
Aiden carefully snipped the stitches with a small pair of manicure scissors and felt something inside.
A piece of paper.
He pulled it out and unfolded it.
How had it even gotten in there?
Aiden read it and went pale.
Then he said:
"You won't believe what your daughter wrote.
God, you have no idea what Amelia was hiding from you..."
---
What was Amelia hiding inside that little flower — and why did Aiden go pale the moment he read it?
