Chapter 2: The Envelope
He was wearing a team jersey.
Ethan's favorite player.
Walking straight toward us.
Ethan made a sound I hadn't heard in months.
Not a word.
Just this pure, breathless noise — like his whole body couldn't hold the feeling.
He grabbed my arm with both hands and whispered, "Mom.
That's HIM."
The player crouched down right in front of Ethan and smiled.
"I heard you never missed a game," he said.
"That makes you more dedicated than half my teammates."
Ethan laughed.
Actually laughed.
But then the player reached into his jacket and pulled out an envelope.
He held it out to my husband.
"This isn't just from me," he said quietly.
"There are a lot of people who wanted to be part of this."
My husband's hands were shaking as he opened it.
I watched his face change.
He looked up at the player.
Then back down at what was inside.
Then he turned to me — and I saw tears running down his face.
"They found a way," he said.
"I don't know how, but they found a way."
I reached for the envelope.
And when I saw what was inside, my legs nearly gave out.
