Chapter 1: She Can't Know About This

I told my MIL we weren't having visitors after I gave birth — then I woke up and heard her in the nursery.
"I just need some time to recover.
I barely recognize myself right now, and I'm not ready to see everyone yet.
And I definitely don't want Noah being passed around the whole family."
My MIL, Gloria, surprised me.
"Of course, Valerie.
Whatever makes you comfortable.
I just wish you'd let me help."
Even my husband, Owen, backed me up.
"Mom, give her some time."
Gloria actually respected my wishes.
Then, on the day Noah turned one month old, I was exhausted.
I put him down for a nap and eventually fell asleep myself.
I don't know how long I'd been asleep when I woke up to voices downstairs.
I heard Gloria's voice.
"She can't know about this."
Then Owen:
"Mom, keep your voice down."
My eyes flew open.
What was Gloria doing in the nursery?
I got out of bed and hurried down the hall.
The nursery door was slightly open.
I pushed it wider.
Gloria was standing beside the crib.
She was dressed up like she was going somewhere.
Owen stood beside her with the diaper bag.
And Noah was in Gloria's arms, wrapped in a little festive blanket I'd never seen before.
I stopped in the doorway.
"What the hell is going on?"
Gloria spun around.
"Oh!
You're awake."
Then I noticed something else.
Noah wasn't wearing the onesie I'd put him to sleep in.
"Why is he dressed like that?"
Neither of them answered.
I looked at Owen.
"Where did you take my baby?"
"Valerie, calm down.
Mom just wanted to do something small for Noah's one-month birthday."
"You took him to her house?"
"It was only for a little while."
I stared at him.
"While I was asleep?!"
I looked at Owen.
"You knew about this?"
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
"You let your mother take our one-month-old baby out of this house while I was sleeping?"
"I went with them."
Gloria sighed.
"You said you weren't ready for visitors."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"So your solution was to take my baby to them?!"
"It was just family," Gloria said.
"Noah was perfectly fine."
"Who was there?"
"Valerie—"
"Who, Gloria?"
Owen stepped between us.
"Valerie, please.
Noah is home.
He's fine."
Then I noticed Gloria's phone in her hand.
"You took pictures, didn't you?"
She went quiet.
"Give me your phone."
"Valerie, there's no need—"
"I said give me the phone."
Gloria looked at Owen.
Finally, he nodded.
She handed it to me.
There were dozens of pictures.
Gloria holding Noah beside a cake.
Owen with his father.
Aunts.
Cousins.
People I'd specifically said I wasn't ready to have around my newborn.
I kept swiping.
Then I stopped.
My whole body went cold.
I zoomed in.
No.
There was no mistaking it.
Owen saw which picture I was looking at.
His face went white.
I looked at him.
"You knew they were going to do this?!"
