Chapter 2: More Than Two

I asked Bennett what was going on, but he wouldn't say over the phone.
"Just come.
Don't message them first."
I made up an excuse to my mom, told her I needed to handle something back home, and drove three hours that same night.
When I got to my building, Bennett was waiting in the hallway.
He looked older somehow.
Tired.
"I didn't want to tell you this on the phone," he said.
"I wasn't sure at first.
But last night I heard it again."
"Heard what?"
He hesitated.
"Voices.
More than two.
And earlier today, while you were gone, I counted at least four different people going in and out of your apartment."
My stomach dropped.
"Asher and Adeline aren't alone in there," he said quietly.
"I don't think they've been alone since the first week."
I stood there trying to process that.
Then Bennett reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
"There's something else," he said.
"I took this yesterday."
He turned the screen toward me.
It was a photo.
Taken through the gap in my hallway door.
Someone was carrying boxes out of my apartment.
Not moving boxes.
My boxes.
The ones I'd left in the storage closet.
My hands went cold.
"That's not all," Bennett said.
"I recognized one of them."
He looked at me carefully before he said the name.

What Bennett said next stopped her cold — and what she found inside her apartment was worse than she ever imagined.
