Chapter 1: The Call I Wasn't Expecting
I sublet my apartment to a young couple while I spent four months caring for my mom — two weeks later, my neighbor called and said, "Please don't contact them yet.
There's something you need to see first."
My mom has always been the person I could count on, so when she was badly hurt in a car accident and needed help while she recovered, there was no question I'd be there for her.
The only problem was that she lived in another city.
Her recovery could take months, but since I worked remotely, there was nothing keeping me from packing up my laptop and staying with her until she was back on her feet.
The only thing I had to figure out was my apartment.
Paying four months of rent for an empty place would've eaten through my savings, so with my landlord's approval, I decided to sublet it.
I posted in a local Facebook housing group and found Asher and Adeline, a young couple looking for a temporary place.
Honestly, they seemed perfect.
They had steady jobs, their references checked out, and when they came to see the apartment, they were polite and friendly.
I handed them the keys and left the next morning feeling like at least one problem had sorted itself out.
For the first two weeks, everything seemed normal.
They paid on time, sent me a message saying they'd settled in, and I focused on Mom.
Then one evening, Bennett called.
He'd lived next door to me for years, and over time, we'd become good friends.
He was the kind of neighbor who had a spare key, watered my plants when I traveled, and always called me directly if something seemed off.
The second I answered, I knew something was wrong.
"Is that young couple still staying in your apartment?"
"Yeah.
Why?"
Bennett went quiet for a moment, then lowered his voice.
"Please don't contact them yet.
There's something you need to see first."
