I sat down because her face scared me more than her words had.
She reached into the backpack and pulled out a folder.
Plain.
Worn at the corners like she'd carried it a long time.
"What is that?"
"Just let me talk first."
"Chloe—"
"Mom.

She opened it.
Inside was a letter.
I recognized the hospital logo before I could stop myself.
"That's from St.
Andrew's," I said.
"That's where your father—"
"He found me," she said.
"Richard found me.
He knew Dad.
He was there at the end."

"He came to the nursing program as a guest lecturer.
I didn't know who he was at first.
Then he said Dad's name and I just—" She pressed her hand flat on the table.
"He told me things about Dad that I never knew.
Things you never told me."
"What things?"
She looked up.
Her eyes were dry now, which was worse somehow.
"Mom, why did you tell me Dad left us?"
The room went very still.
"Because he did," I said.
"He didn't leave," Chloe said quietly.
"He was trying to come back.
Richard has the letters.
Thirty-one letters.
All sent to this address." She slid one across the table.
"You never told me a single one arrived."
