Chapter 1: Everything I Had

I sold my car and emptied my savings to send my daughter to nursing school — She came home married to a man twice her age and said, "I did it because of you."

My daughter called me every night for four months, and then she stopped.

Chloe is twenty-two.

I emptied everything I had to get her to that nursing program in London — the emergency money, the coffee tin, the notes folded in the pocket of a coat I don't wear anymore.

I've cleaned houses and worked doubles at a care home since she was three years old.

At the start, she rang me crying about the cold and the food and the flat she shared with two other girls.

"I don't think I belong here, Mom."

Then, around month five, the calls got short.

Ten minutes.

Five.

Sorry, Mom, I have to go.

"Chloe, have you met someone?"

She laughed a beat too fast.

"Mom."

That laugh told me more than an answer would have.

She said she was flying home for a visit, and I asked her to send me a photo of her life there.

Her room.

Her friends.

Anything.

She put me off for a week.

Seven days before her flight, it came through while I was folding laundry.

Chloe on a London street in a dark coat, pale, smiling.

Next to her, a man.

I placed the phone face down on the counter and left it there.

She rang before I could type anything.

"Mom, I need you not to yell."

"What did you do?"

"I got married."

I asked how old he was.

She didn't answer.

I asked again.

"He's fifty-six."

I sat down on the kitchen chair because my legs went.

I said things that week — I'd give anything back.

I asked if she'd sold herself.

I asked what he was paying her.

She didn't shout at me.

She just said, very quietly, "Please wait until I get home."

Then she came through the arrivals gate and not one piece of the story I'd built in my head fit her.

No jewelry.

No handbag.

The same backpack she left with.

I drove home without speaking because I knew if I started I wouldn't stop.

The second we were inside, I turned around.

"Did you marry him for his money?"

Her eyes filled right away, which only confused me more.

She pulled out a chair and sat down like there was nothing left in her legs — "Mom, sit down too."
