Chapter 2: The Call He Didn't Want Me to Hear
"Yes," I said.
"8:30.
I was marked a no-show."
Ethan didn't move.
He looked at Lily, then back at me.
"You gave up the interview.
For her."
It wasn't a question.
"She was alone and frightened," I said.
"What was I supposed to do?"
He was quiet for a moment.
Then something shifted behind his eyes.
"Come with me."
He led us both to a bench near the station entrance and sat Lily on his knee.
Then he pulled out his phone and made a call.
"Janet.
Cancel my 9 o'clock." A pause.
"All of them."
He hung up and looked at me directly.
"Tell me about yourself, Clara Bennett."
I almost laughed.
"Here?
Now?"
"You just showed me more about your character than any interview could." He glanced at Lily, who was quietly arranging stickers on the back of my résumé folder.
"I've been trying to fill that position for four months.
Three candidates.
All qualified on paper.
None of them would have done what you just did."
My throat tightened.
Then his phone buzzed.
He glanced at the screen — and his face went cold.
"Excuse me one second." He stood and turned away, voice dropping low.
"I told you not to call me on this number…
No.
She doesn't know anything.
Keep it that way."
He hung up.
When he turned back, his smile had returned — but his eyes hadn't.
