Chapter 1: The Girl in the Pink Jacket

I sacrificed the most important job interview of my life because a terrified six-year-old girl grabbed my coat in a Chicago train station and begged me not to leave her.

The company coldly marked me as a no-show—but thirty minutes later, the girl's father came running through the station, and when he introduced himself, I nearly dropped my résumé.

His name was Ethan Whitmore.

Yes.

**That Whitmore.**

That morning, I was three train stops away from interviewing at Whitmore Capital Group for a $58,000-a-year position that could finally pull my family out of survival mode.

Then a tiny hand caught my sleeve.

"Please...

don't leave me too."

I looked down.

A little girl in a pink puffer jacket stood alone among hundreds of rushing commuters, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"I'm Lily," she whispered.

"I lost my aunt."

The clock read 7:44.

My interview was at 8:30.

Every practical thought screamed at me to find an employee and walk away.

Instead, I looked at Lily trembling beneath the fluorescent lights and knew I couldn't leave her.

I took her hand.

"I'm Clara.

We're finding your family together."

What should have taken five minutes became a nightmare.

One employee sent us downstairs.

Another directed us to security.

By 8:04, nobody had located Lily's family.

So I called HR.

"I'm supposed to interview at 8:30," I explained.

"I found a lost child.

I'm trying to get there as soon as—"

"If you're not here at your scheduled time," the woman interrupted, "you'll be marked as a no-show."

My stomach dropped.

"She's six years old."

"We cannot reschedule."

Click.

Lily looked up at me.

"Are you mad at me?"

My heart shattered.

"Never."

"But you're sad."

I swallowed hard.

"Sometimes doing the right thing costs us something."

She dug through her unicorn backpack and carefully pressed a wrinkled purple butterfly sticker into my palm.

"You can have this," she whispered.

"Because you stayed."

At 8:31, footsteps thundered down the hallway.

"LILY!"

A man in an expensive charcoal suit came sprinting toward us.

"Daddy!"

He dropped to his knees and pulled her into his arms, trembling as he kissed her hair.

Then he finally noticed me.

His gaze moved from my worn heels to my navy interview dress...

then to the résumé folder clutched against my chest.

"You stayed with my daughter?"

"She was scared," I said.

"I couldn't leave her."

He held my gaze for a long moment.

Then he extended his hand.

"Ethan Whitmore."

I stopped breathing.

Whitmore.

The owner of the company whose interview I had just sacrificed.

His eyes dropped to my résumé.

**Clara Bennett — Whitmore Capital Group.**

Then his expression shifted completely.

"Wait," he said slowly.

"You were supposed to be interviewing with us this morning?"

What does Ethan Whitmore say next — and what does this mean for Clara's future?
