Chapter 2: The Name in the Box

My heart was already hammering before she said a single word.
Maya didn't cry.
She didn't fidget.
She just sat there with her hands flat on the counter, like she had rehearsed this moment a hundred times.
"Mom made me promise not to tell you," she said.
"But if you open those boxes, you're going to find out anyway.
And I didn't want you to find out like that."
I pulled out the stool across from her and sat down slowly.
"Maya.
What are you talking about?"
She looked at the counter for a moment, then back up at me.
"There's a name in those boxes.
A man's name.
And some letters." She paused.
"Mom knew him before she got sick.
I don't know everything.
But I know she was scared you'd find them."
The kitchen felt very quiet.
"How long have you known about this?" I asked.
"Since the week before she went to the hospital," Maya said.
"She told me where the letters were.
She said if you ever went looking, I should talk to you first."
I didn't move.
Then Maya said something that made my chest go cold.
"Dad…
I don't think those kids are the only secret she was keeping."
