Chapter 2: What He Said Next

Part 2 ⬇️
Wesley looked at me for a long moment, then said quietly, "Are you sure it's mine?"
The photographer stopped moving.
My daughters went still.
The whole world seemed to hold its breath.
I couldn't speak.
I just stared at him.
"Wesley—" I finally managed.
"I'm serious," he said, his voice low.
"Are you absolutely sure?"
I felt my legs go weak.
Nine years.
Three daughters.
A life built together.
And he was standing there, in front of our children, asking me that.
"How could you say that?" I whispered.
He didn't answer.
He just set the tiny blue outfit back in the box and placed it on the table beside him.
Carefully.
Like it meant nothing.
Our oldest daughter, who had just turned eight, looked up at me with wide eyes.
"Mommy, why is Daddy upset?"
I had no answer for her.
Then Wesley's phone buzzed.
He glanced at the screen — and something crossed his face.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Relief.
He stepped away from us and answered the call, turning his back to the photographer, to our daughters, to me.
I stood there in my light pink dress, hands shaking, while he spoke in a voice too low for me to hear.
When he turned back around, his expression had completely changed.
And what he said next was worse than the first thing.
---
What Wesley said next left everyone at that photoshoot speechless — and the truth behind it is more painful than anyone expected.
