Chapter 1: The Blue Outfit in the Box
I planned a matching family photoshoot to surprise my husband with the news that we were finally having the son he'd always wanted — but when he realized, his first words made my stomach drop.
My husband, Wesley, and I had been together for nine years, and during that time, we'd built a family I absolutely adored.
We had three wonderful daughters, and Wesley loved them more than anything.
Still, he'd always dreamed of having a son too.
He'd joke about wanting another boy in the house and talk about teaching him to fish, fixing things together, and someday passing down the watch his father had given him.
So when I became pregnant with our fourth child, Wesley was thrilled.
More than anything, we wanted a healthy baby, so we decided not to focus on the gender and planned to find out only when we got closer to the birth.
But as the months passed, I realized I simply couldn't wait that long.
At one of my appointments, I finally gave in and asked the doctor to tell me the gender without Wesley knowing.
It was a boy.
I nearly cried with excitement because I knew how much this would mean to Wesley.
Instead of simply telling him, I secretly arranged a family photoshoot and bought matching outfits for all of us.
The girls and I wore light pink, while Wesley wore light blue.
I'd also tucked a tiny blue outfit inside a gift box for him to open during the shoot.
He thought we were simply taking new family photos, and somehow I managed to keep the secret until the photographer said there was one final shot.
I handed Wesley the box.
"What is this?" he asked, smiling.
"Just open it."
He lifted the lid, pulled out the tiny blue outfit, and stared at it.
Then his eyes moved to my stomach.
"It's a boy," I said, barely containing my excitement.
"We're finally having a son."
I'd imagined his reaction for weeks.
I expected a hug, laughter, maybe even happy tears.
Instead, Wesley's smile slowly faded.
He stared at me for several seconds before finally speaking, and what he said left me too stunned to respond.
