Chapter 1: The Seat by the Window

I paid for a window seat on the plane so my 6-year-old daughter with autism could sit there, but a rude woman took it instead — then the pilot taught her a lesson she'd never forget.
My six-year-old daughter, Emma, has autism.
After my husband passed away two years ago, I decided it was finally time for the two of us to take a vacation.
It was going to be her very first flight, and I booked seat 7A by the window for Emma and 7B for myself.
The window seat was important because looking at the sky and sunlight helped calm her whenever she had a meltdown.
When we reached our row, a woman was already seated in 7A.
I politely said:
"Excuse me, ma'am.
I think you're sitting in my daughter's seat."
She immediately frowned and said that she had also paid for a window seat.
The flight attendant checked both of our boarding passes, sighed, and said:
"I'm so sorry, ma'am.
The aircraft was changed this morning.
Some passengers were automatically reassigned, and a mistake was made.
This seat was accidentally assigned to two passengers."
I explained that it was very important for Emma to have the window seat.
The flight attendant turned to the woman and politely asked if she'd be willing to move to an available seat a few rows behind us.
It wasn't a window seat.
The woman said:
"I paid for a window seat, and I'm not moving."
I stared at her and said:
"Ma'am, please.
It's very important for my daughter."
She replied:
"Let your daughter sit somewhere else.
I don't care."
I said:
"But she has autism.
Please, she really needs the window seat."
She snorted and answered:
"That's not my problem!"
I didn't want to make a scene in front of my daughter, so we stepped away.
We took the available seats, and I silently prayed that Emma wouldn't have a meltdown during the five-hour flight.
As soon as we were in the air, the pilot welcomed everyone over the intercom.
Then he said:
"To the passenger seated in 7A, we have a gift for you.
You're our airline's 400th passenger."
A flight attendant brought the woman a box.
She opened it and screamed:
"How dare you?!"
---
What was inside that box?
And what did the pilot do next?
