Chapter 2: His Name on Every Envelope

— Part 2 —
Inside the bag, beneath layers of soft yarn, were envelopes.
Dozens of them.
Each one sealed.
Each one addressed in my stepmom's handwriting — but not to me.
My hands shook as I lifted the top envelope.
The name on the front stopped my breath.
It was my half-brother.
The one who cut off contact with our family fifteen years ago.
The one she never spoke about.
Every envelope had his name.
I heard the bathroom door click open behind me.
"You weren't supposed to see those."
Her voice was calm.
Almost relieved.
I turned around slowly.
"What is this?" I asked.
"All this time — you told me he was gone.
You said you didn't know where he was."
She sat down in her chair and folded her hands in her lap.
"I lied," she said quietly.
"To protect you."
"Protect me from what?"
She looked at me for a long moment.
Something shifted behind her eyes.
"From what he did before he disappeared."
My chest tightened.
"What did he do?"
She reached out and took the envelope from my hand.
Held it against her chest.
"If I tell you," she whispered, "you can never unknow it."
The room went completely silent.
And then her phone rang.
The screen lit up on the table between us.
The name on the screen was his.
