Chapter 1: The Knitting Bag

I paid $2,500 a month for my stepmom's assisted living for a year—when her nurse told me where the money was really going, I went pale.

I'm 40, and the woman I've always called Mom...

isn't my biological mother.

She entered my life when I was eight after my mother died.

She never tried to take her place—she was simply there.

She made my lunches.

She watched every school play.

She stayed beside me whenever I was sick.

And after my dad died two years ago, we only had each other.

But grief didn't make life stop.

I work long days—sometimes 12 to 14 hours—and when her health began declining, I realized she needed care I couldn't provide.

That's when she told me about an assisted living facility she'd found.

"They have meals, activities, people my age," she explained.

"I won't be alone."

It cost $2,500 every month.

That was more than I could comfortably manage—over 80% of what remained after my bills—but I never hesitated.

She'd given me everything.

So I paid for a year.

Every month was the same—I brought her the check, stayed for an hour, and listened to her stories.

Then last week, I arrived one day earlier than usual.

That's when everything changed.

A nurse stopped me near the front desk.

"You're her daughter, aren't you?" she asked.

I nodded.

She paused before lowering her voice.

"I don't think you realize this...

but your stepmom doesn't pay anything to live here."

My stomach dropped.

"What are you talking about?"

"She's a retired teacher who helped fund this place years ago," the nurse explained.

"Her stay is completely free."

The floor seemed to shift beneath me.

"Then...

what has she been doing with my money?"

The nurse glanced around before leaning closer.

"If you really want to know...

look inside her knitting bag.

She never lets it leave her side."

My hands trembled as I stepped into her room.

The bag was beside her chair.

When she went into the bathroom, I opened it.

Buried beneath the yarn was something cold and disturbing.

My fingers went still.

"Oh my God..." I whispered.

It was something I wished I'd never found.
