Chapter 2: The Envelope She Left Behind

Inside the mailbox was an envelope.
Thick.
Cream-colored.
My name written on the front in shaky handwriting.
Mrs.
Higgins' handwriting.
"Where did this come from?" I whispered.
The sheriff's jaw tightened.
"That's what we're trying to figure out."
I turned it over.
It had already been opened.
"You read it?" My voice cracked.
"Ma'am, we had reason to."
My hands were trembling so badly the envelope rattled.
I pulled out the letter inside.
The first line stopped my heart.
*"If you're reading this, I didn't make it through the night.
And there are people who made sure of that."*
I looked up at the sheriff.
He was watching me carefully.
Too carefully.
"She thought someone was going to h*rt her?" I said.
He didn't answer.
"Who else knew I helped her yesterday?" I asked.
A long pause.
"Her son was parked across the street," he said quietly.
"He watched the whole thing."
The ground shifted under my feet.
"Her son?
She told me she hadn't spoken to him in years—"
"He showed up at the station this morning," the sheriff interrupted.
"Before we even called him."
My stomach dropped.
"He's claiming the house is his," he added.
"And he's claiming you had no right to be on that property."
The letter was still in my hand.
There was a second page I hadn't read yet.

What was on that second page — and what did Mrs.
Higgins' son really know?
