Chapter 1: The Lawn, The Letter, and the Sheriff at My Door

I mowed the lawn for the 82-year-old widow next door — the next morning, a sheriff woke me up with a bl00d-curdling request.

I was 34 weeks pregnant and completely alone.

My ex left the moment I told him I was pregnant, leaving me with a mortgage and bills I could barely look at without panicking.

For months, I'd been buried in overdue notices.

Last Tuesday felt like rock bottom.

It was 95 degrees.

My back was killing me.

And I'd just gotten the call — foreclosure had officially begun.

I stepped outside because I couldn't breathe.

That's when I saw Mrs.

Higgins.

She was 82, recently widowed, and struggling to push a rusty lawnmower through grass that nearly reached her knees.

I should've gone back inside.

I had enough problems of my own.

But I couldn't.

I walked over, gently took the mower from her, told her to rest, and spent the next three hours cutting her lawn.

My ankles were swollen, my shirt was soaked, and more than once I had to stop just to breathe through the pain.

When I finished, she squeezed my hand.

"You're a good girl," she said softly.

"Don't forget that."

I didn't think much of it.

That night, I barely slept.

Then, early the next morning, sirens jolted me awake.

Right outside MY house.

My heart dropped.

Someone pounded on my door.

When I opened it, the sheriff was standing there.

Two patrol cars were parked behind him.

"Ma'am," he said flatly.

"We need to ask you some questions about Mrs.

Higgins."

My stomach twisted.

"What happened?"

He paused.

"She was found d3ad this morning."

The world went silent.

"I...

I just helped her yesterday," I whispered.

His expression didn't change.

"We know," he said.

"That's exactly why we're here."

My knees began to shake.

"Did I do something wrong?

I only mowed her lawn —"

"Then you won't mind explaining this," he interrupted.

He pointed toward my mailbox.

My bl00d ran cold.

"Go ahead," he said.

"Open it."

My hands shook so badly I could barely lift the lid.

I had no idea what I'd find.

But the moment I saw it —

I screamed.

What was inside that mailbox?

And why did the sheriff come straight to her door?
