Chapter 2: The Letter He Never Sent

Part 2 — continued below ⬇️
He didn't answer right away.
He just reached into the inside pocket of his dress shirt and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
He held it out to me without a word.
My hands were shaking as I took it.
It was a letter.
Handwritten.
Old enough that the creases had gone soft.
I recognized the name at the top.
Mine.
But the date was from high school.
Seventeen years ago.
"Ryan…
what is this?"
"I wrote it," he said quietly.
"I never sent it."
I started reading.
The words didn't sound like the boy who had humiliated me in the hallways.
They sounded like someone who was terrified.
Someone who didn't know how to be anything other than cruel because that was all he'd ever been shown.
I looked up at him.
"This still doesn't explain—"
"There's more," he said.
He pulled out his phone.
Opened a message thread.
Handed it to me.
The name at the top of the thread made my throat close.
It was someone I hadn't thought about in years.
Someone who had been there every single time Ryan had come after me in school.
Someone I had always believed was just a bystander.
I looked at Ryan.
"She told you to do it," I said.
It wasn't a question.
He nodded slowly.
"She told me what to say.
Every time."
