Chapter 2: The Letter She Left Behind

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely tear the envelope open.

Inside was a single folded letter.

Cara's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately — the same looping letters she used to leave on notes tucked into my jacket pocket thirteen years ago.

I started reading.

*"I didn't leave because of the argument.

I left because I found out I was pregnant."*

The ground shifted under my feet.

*"I was scared.

I was young.

I made a decision I have regretted every single day since."*

I looked up.

The woman in black was still watching me.

"Who are you?" I asked.

She didn't flinch.

"My name is Diane," she said quietly.

"I was Cara's neighbor for the last six years."

"Why did she give this to you?"

"Because she was afraid you'd stop her before she finished what she came to do."

My throat tightened.

"What did she come to do?"

Diane glanced toward the far edge of the cemetery.

I followed her eyes.

A young girl — maybe nine or ten years old — was standing alone beside a tree, watching me.

She had Cara's dark eyes.

And she had my jaw.

My nose.

My exact expression when I don't know what to say.

Diane spoke before I could.

"She didn't just come back to marry you," she said.

"She came back to make sure you'd find her."
