Chapter 2: The Woman at the Door

She was tall.

Polished.

The kind of woman who looked like she'd never waited for anything in her life.

She walked in like she owned the room — like she'd been inside it before.

Aaron didn't even flinch.

He just smiled.

That same smile he'd given me for fifteen years.

"This is Diana," he said.

"She's the reason any of this exists."

I looked at her.

She looked at me.

And something in her eyes wasn't triumph.

It was pity.

"You don't know, do you," she said quietly.

It wasn't a question.

"Know what?" My voice came out steadier than I felt.

Aaron set something on the table.

An envelope.

Thick.

Legal-looking.

"Your grandmother's house," he said.

"The one she left you.

I've been the silent co-signer on that property since before we got engaged.

One signature tonight and it transfers."

The room tilted.

Fifteen years.

The delays.

The excuses.

The "not yets."

All of it — timed to this moment.

But Diana hadn't moved toward the envelope.

She was staring at Aaron with an expression I couldn't read.

"Aaron," she said slowly.

"She doesn't know about the other document, does she."

He went very still.

And that's when I realized — whatever Aaron had planned tonight, Diana wasn't entirely on his side.

---

What's in that second document — and whose side is Diana really on?

What Aaron did next made my blood run c0ld.
