Chapter 1: The Anniversary Dinner

I married my high school sweetheart, but on our first anniversary, I overheard him on the phone saying, "She's believed every lie since we were teenagers.
Tonight, I finally finish what I started."
I'd been with my high school sweetheart for fifteen years before he finally proposed.
Every Valentine's Day, birthday, and Christmas, I'd catch myself watching his hands, hoping for a small box that never came.
Whenever I brought it up, Aaron gave me the same gentle smile and said, "Listen, a ring isn't everything.
I'm saving money.
I want it to be perfect.
I want to give you the life you deserve."
Everyone around me moved on.
My friends got engaged.
Even my younger cousin walked down the aisle.
One Thanksgiving, my stepmother joked in front of everyone that I was "the girlfriend who couldn't seal the deal."
Still, I trusted him.
I'd loved Aaron since I was sixteen, sitting on my grandma's porch swing, dreaming aloud about the future we'd share.
So when he finally proposed last year, I cried like I'd won something priceless.
I believed every delay, every excuse, every "not yet" had led to that moment.
Our first anniversary was last Friday.
He made dinner, lit candles, kissed my forehead, and told me to pour the wine while he "went to change into something nicer."
I walked down the hallway barefoot, smiling — until his voice stopped me just outside the bedroom.
Low.
Controlled.
Nothing like how he ever spoke to me.
"Yeah...
she's believed every lie all these years.
I've been playing along since high school.
Tonight, I finally finish what I started."
My legs nearly gave out.
He was right.
I knew nothing.
What he was planning.
How he intended to trap me.
Why he'd pretended to love me for so long.
But I needed answers.
So I decided to play along — right to the end.
I wiped my tears, stepped back to the kitchen, and smiled when he came back.
He looked at me, hiding something behind his back.
At that moment, a car pulled up — then someone knocked at the door.
"Funny," Aaron said.
"Did you really think I stayed with you for love?"
The door opened.
And the person who stepped inside —
was the reason he'd stayed with me all those years.
