Chapter 2: The Name on the Paper

My apartment had been transformed.
The dishes were washed.
The floors were clean.
Fresh flowers sat on the kitchen table.
And something was cooking on the stove — something that smelled incredible.
Stan was standing in the middle of it all, calm as anything, wearing one of my aprons.
"You're home early," he said.
"What is all this?" I asked.
"Dinner," he said simply.
"Sit down."
I didn't sit.
I just stared.
Then I noticed the papers on the counter.
Printed documents.
A logo I recognized.
I picked them up before he could stop me.
It was a business registration.
Stan's name was on it.
But so was a company name I knew — a firm I had read about in a financial magazine just weeks before.
"Stan," I said slowly.
"What is this?"
He was quiet for a long moment.
Then he said, "There are some things I should have told you before you asked me to marry you."
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
"Like what?" I whispered.
He looked at me with those same kind eyes from the street.
But now there was something else behind them.
Something steady.
Something that hadn't been there before — or maybe I just hadn't seen it.
"Like who I actually am," he said.
