Chapter 2: The Man at the Door

Inside was a photograph of Daniel standing beside my late husband and daughter.

“No,” I whispered.

“This can’t be real.”

On the back, in my husband’s handwriting, were the words: “If anything happens to us, Daniel knows the truth.”

I stared at Lily.

“Your father knew my family?”

She nodded slowly.

“Dad said you might be angry when you found out.”

“Found out what?”

Before she could answer, I noticed a sealed envelope beneath the photograph.

My name was written across it, along with a date—the exact date of the accident.

My hands began trembling harder.

“Why did Daniel wait a year to give me this?”

“He said you had to love me first,” Lily whispered.

“Otherwise, you might leave after learning what he did.”

My stomach turned cold.

“What did your father do, Lily?”

She opened her mouth, but a hard knock sounded at the front door.

Lily grabbed my arm.

“Don’t answer it.”

“Why not?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Dad said if that man ever came here, we were supposed to take the letter and run.”
