Chapter 1: The Promise Beside the Hospital Bed

I married a dyjng single father because he begged me to raise his little daughter after he was gone — a year later, she handed me a box and said, "Dad told me to give this to you today."
Several years ago, I lost my husband and my daughter in a car accident.
After that, I was utterly alone.
My life shattered into pieces, and I had no idea how I was supposed to keep going.
But bills still had to be paid, and I still needed money for food, so I found a job as a housekeeper at a nearby hospital.
I worked there for a few years, and for the most part, no one really noticed me.
I didn't mind.
Honestly, I'd completely shut myself off from everyone.
But a little over a year ago, a patient was admitted to one of the rooms.
His name was Daniel, and he had terminal cancer.
There was always a little girl seated beside him, maybe around six years old.
Her name was Lily.
God, she reminded me so much of my late daughter.
Each day after school, she'd come in with her little backpack, sit beside her father, and spend as much time in his room as she possibly could.
Sometimes she'd even stop by to see him in the morning before school.
Her hair would be messy, and she'd be hungry.
Daniel would try to braid her hair with his trembling hands and share some of the food from his breakfast tray with her.
It broke my heart.
One day, I couldn't bear it anymore.
I went over and simply offered to help.
I braided Lily's hair, took her to the hospital cafeteria, and even drove her to school with Daniel's permission.
It was obvious that they had no one but each other.
And that's basically how I started talking to Daniel and Lily.
Daniel eventually told me his story.
His wife had djed giving birth to Lily, and he'd been raising her alone ever since.
We started spending a lot of time together in Daniel's hospital room.
Sometimes we'd drink tea, eat small treats, and just talk.
I don't know how to explain it, but around them, I began smiling again.
I started feeling alive.
Then one day, while Lily was at school, Daniel took my hand and said:
"Please marry me."
My legs went numb.
"But Daniel, we barely know each other..."
He smiled and said:
"Sweetheart, I'm begging you.
Marry me.
I know we haven't known each other long, but I've fallen in love with you.
And more than anything, I want to know that when I'm gone, Lily will be with someone who loves her.
If you're my wife, you'll also be able to stay in this house and use what I leave behind to take care of her."
My heart was breaking.
In such a short time, Daniel and Lily had genuinely become incredibly close to me.
I thought about Lily and realized that I couldn't leave her alone either.
So I said yes.
We got married right there in Daniel's hospital room.
I even wore a white sundress, and Lily wore a lovely little dress.
That day, Lily hugged me and said she was happy her dad would have me by his side during his final days.
Two weeks after the wedding, Daniel passed away.
I genuinely grieved for him.
Afterward, I officially became Lily's guardian.
Lily and I continued living in the house Daniel had left for us.
We got along beautifully, and I loved her as if she were my own daughter.
A year passed.
I don't regret anything.
Lily made me feel alive again.
But over the past few days, Lily had been unusually quiet.
I kept asking if something was wrong, but she wouldn't really tell me anything.
Then yesterday, while I was making dinner, she came over to me.
She held out a small box and said:
"Dad told me to give this to you today.
You still have no idea why he chose you."
My hands were shaking as I opened the box.
God, I sank into the kitchen chair.
When I saw what Daniel had left for me, I screamed so loudly it echoed through the entire house.
