Chapter 2: The Name in the Second Line

Part 2 ⬇️

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the letter.

The attorney — his name was Mr.

Hale — stepped forward and steadied me by the arm.

He guided me to the sofa and sat across from me without saying a word.

I looked back down at the second line.

*"I am your father."*

The room went completely silent.

I read it again.

And again.

"That's not possible," I whispered.

"My father d*ed before I was born.

My mother told me.

Everyone told me."

Mr.

Hale looked at me with the saddest eyes I had ever seen.

"I know what you were told," he said quietly.

"Carl knew too.

That's why he never came to you directly.

He was afraid of what the truth would do to you."

"He was sick for two years before you met him," he continued.

"He spent most of that time trying to find you.

When he finally did…

he couldn't bring himself to just knock on your door.

So he arranged to be on your hospice list."

My stomach dropped.

"He planned this?

All of it?"

Mr.

Hale reached into his briefcase and placed a second envelope on the table.

"There's more," he said.

"And I have to warn you — what's in here involves someone you still see regularly.

Someone who knew who Carl was the entire time and said nothing."

I stared at the envelope.

My hands wouldn't move.

Who in her life had been hiding this secret all along?

What's inside that second envelope?
