Chapter 1: The Last Wish of a Dying Stranger

I married a dying stranger because it was his last wish — after his funeral, his lawyer came to me and said, "He made me wait until today to tell you the truth about who he really was."

Three times a week, I volunteered with a local hospice support program.

Most of the people I visited were terminally ill and needed some help around the house.

A few months ago, I started visiting a new patient named Carl.

He was around forty years old, had stage 4 cancer, and lived completely alone.

We became friends almost immediately.

Carl was kind, warm, and easy to talk to.

It felt like I had an instant connection with him, as if we'd known each other all our lives.

I brought him meals, helped clean his house, and we often just sat together playing board games over a cup of tea.

Then one day, Carl looked at me and said:

"Marry me.

I know how this sounds, but I'd like to d*e knowing I wasn't alone."

My bl**d ran cold.

I said:

"Carl, but we haven't known each other for very long..."

He replied:

"I know.

But I knew what kind of person you were the moment I met you.

It would truly mean everything to me.

It's my last wish before I d*e."

I said yes.

The next day, a priest came to Carl's house and married us.

Standing there in his living room, with no guests, no flowers, and no music, we became husband and wife.

I could see how happy he was in that moment.

Carl passed away ten days later.

My heart was broken.

I truly mourned him.

After his funeral, there was a knock at my front door.

A man was standing there.

He introduced himself as Carl's attorney and said:

"Carl made me wait until today to tell you who he really was."

He handed me an envelope and said that once I read the letter inside, I would understand everything.

When I read the very first line, I froze:

"My dear, our meeting was not a coincidence.

I've known you your whole life and have been quietly watching over you."

When I reached the second line, my knees gave out, and I sank to the floor.

---

What did that second line say?

Who was Carl really — and why had he been watching her her whole life?
