Chapter 2: The Necklace She Was Buried With

My legs nearly gave out.

The girl standing at the bottom of those stairs had Ava's eyes.

Ava's hair.

Ava's exact way of tilting her head when she was confused.

The older woman stepped forward and grabbed the door frame like she was trying to block me.

"I think you have the wrong house," she said quickly.

"No." My voice was shaking.

"No, I don't.

Who is that child?"

The little girl hadn't moved.

She was staring at me the same way I was staring at her — like she recognized me but didn't know why.

"Her name is Lily," the woman said.

"She's my granddaughter.

She's visiting."

"That's not possible." I couldn't stop looking at the girl.

"She looks exactly like my daughter.

Exactly."

The woman's expression shifted.

Something behind her eyes went cold.

"I'm sorry for your loss," she said quietly.

"But you need to leave."

She started to close the door.

That's when the little girl spoke.

"Why are you crying?" she asked me.

"Do you know me?"

The woman froze.

And in that silence, I noticed something that made my heart stop completely.

Around the little girl's neck was a small silver necklace.

The same necklace I had buried with Ava.
