Chapter 2: The Name on the Account

Daniel came home at 11:47 p.m.

I know because Natalie's security camera caught him pulling into the driveway.

She showed me the footage the next morning without saying a word.

Just turned her laptop around and pressed play.

He sat in the car for four minutes before going inside.

When he found my ring on the kitchen island, he called me eleven times.

Then he called Natalie.

"Where is she?"

"Safe."

"Natalie, I need to talk to her."

"She doesn't need to talk to you."

He hung up.

At 2:09 a.m., a text came through from a number I didn't recognize.

*Rachel.

It's Claire.

I think we need to talk.

There are things about Daniel you don't know.

Things he told me that you deserve to hear.*

I stared at that message for a long time.

Natalie read it over my shoulder.

"Don't," she said.

But something about the wording stopped me cold.

*Things he told me that you deserve to hear.*

Not "I'm sorry." Not "please leave him alone."

She wanted to tell me something.

And whatever it was — she sounded afraid.

The next morning, Rebecca Shaw called before I'd finished my first cup of coffee.

"Rachel.

The account Daniel moved the money into — it's not alone.

We found a second one.

And the name on it isn't his."
