Chapter 2: Her Name on the Outside

Inside the purse was a photograph.

Lily.

Alone.

Outside her school gate.

Someone had taken it without her knowing.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

"Mom.

Explain this.

Right now."

Marlene's expression didn't break.

She smoothed her sleeve and looked away like I'd asked about the weather.

"I was keeping her safe.

You don't understand what's out there."

"You were silencing a six-year-old.

I heard you."

"She exaggerates.

She always has."

I looked at Lily.

She was still pressed against the wall, knees pulled to her chest, watching her grandmother with eyes that knew too much for her age.

"Lily." I kept my voice steady.

"How long has Grandma been telling you not to talk?"

She didn't answer.

She looked at Marlene first.

That look told me everything.

Then I reached deeper into the purse.

My fingers found something else.

A folded piece of paper.

A name written on the outside in handwriting I didn't recognize.

Not my name.

Not Lily's.

My late wife's name.
