The officer opened the folder on the hood of his car.
I leaned in.
My name was gone from the deed.
Teresa's name was typed where mine should have been.
The notary stamp was dated three weeks ago.
"Where did this come from?" I asked Mason.
He wouldn't look at me.
"Mason.
Where did this come from?"
"She said you agreed to it," he finally said.
"She said you were putting the house in her name for tax reasons."
I felt the ground shift under me.
I had never signed anything.
Then one of the officers called me over.
He had found something else inside the folder.
A second document.
It was a power of attorney.
My signature was at the bottom.
Except I had never signed it.
I stared at it for a long time.
Then I recognized the date.
It was the same week Frederick was born.
The same week Amy was in the hospital.
The same week I had barely slept and signed whatever Teresa put in front of me, trusting her completely.
She had waited for the worst moment of my life.
And she had used it.
From the back of the police car, Teresa was still shouting.
"That house belongs to this family.
Not to her.
Never to her."
Then she said something that made every relative go quiet.
Something about Amy that changed everything I thought I knew.
