Chapter 2: The Envelope With My Name On It

My hands went cold.
"John begged you?" I whispered.
"John knew you?"
Carl looked away.
His jaw was tight.
He reached into his bag slowly and pulled out an envelope — old, worn at the edges, like it had been handled many times.
My name was on the front.
Written in John's handwriting.

He stood up, knocking his chair back.
His eyes were wet.
"There's something else," he said.
"Something that isn't in that letter.
Something I don't know how to say."
He looked at me the way someone looks at a person they're about to hurt.
"John didn't d*e alone that morning."
The café went quiet around me.
My ears were ringing.
"What do you mean?" I said.
"I was there.
I found him."
Carl shook his head slowly.
"No," he said.
"You found him after."

What Carl revealed next — and what was inside that letter — left me unable to speak.
The truth about John's final morning was nothing like I believed.
