Chapter 1: The Young Man Who Looked Like John

I had dinner with a 30-year-old man at a café every evening for a month — until one night, he looked at me and said, "You don't actually think I'm doing this for no reason, do you?"
A month ago, my husband, John, d*ed.
We had been married for fifty-two years.
Our family lived far away, so after the funeral, I returned to an empty house.
I was completely alone.
That was why I started visiting a small café near my home.
On my first visit, a young man stepped up to my table.
He couldn't have been older than thirty.
"Mind if I sit here, ma'am?"
He looked so much like John at that age that my chest tightened.
"I'd like that very much," I replied.
"Sit down, son."
His name was Carl, and soon we had a routine.
Every evening, he joined me for dinner, and we talked until our soup grew cold.
I told him about John, our children and grandchildren, and the life we had built together.
I spoke about John's sudden d*ath and how strange it felt to wake up without him beside me.
Carl listened patiently, though sometimes his face tightened, and he would excuse himself to the restroom without explaining why.
His company kept me from sinking completely into grief.
Still, one thing bothered me: Carl revealed NOTHING about himself.
He said he was an orphan who had recently moved to our town.
Whenever I asked anything more, he abruptly changed the subject.
Four weeks after we met, Carl arrived pale.
I couldn't get him to talk.
He kept glancing down at his bag, but every time I tried to look inside, he pulled it away from me.
"What happened, Carl?" I asked softly.
He looked me straight in the eye and snapped,
"You don't actually think I'm doing this for no reason, do you?
I waited for your husband's d*ath so I could tell you this — even though he begged me not to."
---
What secret did John ask Carl to keep — and why did he wait until now to speak?
