Chapter 2: Six Words on the Porch

Part 2 ⬇️
There was a woman sitting in the living room.
Not my mother-in-law.
A different woman.
Younger.
Comfortable.
Settled into the armchair like she belonged there — like she had been sitting in that house for years.
And my father-in-law was right beside her, holding her hand.
I stood frozen at that window, my breath fogging the glass.
Then I heard the front door open behind me.
My husband had come back.
"I told you to leave," he said quietly.
His voice was different now.
Flat.
Controlled.
"Who is she?" I asked.
He didn't answer.
"Who is that woman in there with your father?"
He looked away.
"It's complicated."
"Complicated?" I stared at him.
"Where is your mother?"
That was when he finally turned to face me — and the look on his face stopped me cold.
It wasn't guilt.
It wasn't embarrassment.
It was grief.
"She doesn't know you've been coming here without her, does she?" I whispered.
He opened his mouth.
Closed it again.
Before he could say a single word, the front door swung open — and my father-in-law stepped onto the porch.
He looked at my husband.
Then at me.
Then he said six words I will never forget.
