Chapter 1: The Window That Changed Everything

I had been married to my husband for almost three years, and somehow, I had still never been to the house where he grew up.
I'd met his parents plenty of times, of course, but they usually came to us, or we met somewhere halfway.
I never thought much of it.
Then, after a long weekend at Disneyland, everything changed.
We were driving home on Sunday afternoon, exhausted, surrounded by half-empty coffee cups, souvenir bags, and snacks our kids had somehow crushed into every possible corner of the car, when my husband glanced at the GPS and suddenly said, "You know…
we're only about twenty minutes from my parents' town."
I looked over at him.
"Okay?"
He smiled.
"What if we surprised them?"
At first, I thought he was joking.
We were tired, the kids were cranky, and I definitely didn't feel dressed for an unexpected visit with my in-laws after spending most of the day walking around Disneyland.
But he seemed genuinely excited about the idea.
He said his parents were usually home on Sundays, that they'd love seeing the kids unexpectedly, and that I could finally see the house he was always talking about from when he was little.
I hesitated.
"Shouldn't we call first?" I asked.
"What if they're busy?"
"That ruins the surprise," he said, laughing.
"Come on.
When are we ever going to be this close again?"
Something about it felt spontaneous and sweet, so eventually, I agreed.
Twenty minutes later, we pulled onto a quiet residential street lined with older houses and huge trees.
We stopped in front of the house.
It was smaller than I had pictured from his stories.
There were two cars parked outside.
"See?" my husband said, immediately unbuckling his seat belt.
"They're home."
The kids wanted to jump out with us, but he told them to stay in the car for one minute because he wanted to make sure his parents weren't napping before we all rushed to the front door.
I laughed and told him I'd come with him.
We walked up the driveway together.
That was when his mood shifted.
It happened so quickly.
A few seconds earlier, he had been smiling and telling me how he used to hide behind the bushes near the porch when he played with the neighborhood kids.
But as he stepped closer to the main window, everything changed.
He peeked through the window and froze completely.
I watched the color drain from his face.
He jerked backward like he had touched something hot.
"Oh no," he whispered.
"What?"
He looked at me, and there was something in his expression I had never seen before.
"No.
No, no.
Let's just leave."
Before I could even ask what he had seen, he turned around and started walking quickly back toward the car.
"What are you talking about?" I whisper-screamed after him.
"Forget it," he said without turning around.
"Come on.
We're leaving."
That was the moment I knew something was wrong.
He was already halfway down the driveway when curiosity got the better of me.
I should have followed him.
Instead, I took one step toward the window.
Then another.
I leaned forward, looked into his parents' living room, and gasped.
