Chapter 2: Four Words
I held her while she cried.
I didn't push.
I just waited.
Finally, she pulled back and looked at the shoe again.
"His name is Daniel," she said quietly.
"We met eight months ago.
I know that sounds fast.
But he was…
he was so good to me."
"Then where is he, Tina?"
She pressed her lips together.
"There was an accident.
Right after the ceremony.
We were walking to the car and—"
She stopped.
"And what?"
"A driver ran the light.
Daniel pushed me out of the way." Her voice broke.
"They took him in an ambulance.
I couldn't go with him.
I didn't even know which hospital."
My chest went tight.
"So you've been sitting here this whole time not knowing?"
She nodded.
Then she held up the shoe.
"It came off when they lifted him onto the stretcher.
I picked it up.
I don't know why.
I just…
I couldn't leave it there on the road."
I grabbed her hand.
"We're going to find him.
Right now."
But just as I reached for my phone, hers lit up on the bench beside her.
Unknown number.
We both stared at it.
Tina's hand was shaking so badly she could barely pick it up.
She answered.
The voice on the other end said four words.
And the color drained from her face.
