Chapter 1: The Shoe on the Bench
I found my younger sister sitting alone at a bus stop in her wedding dress, holding just one man's dress shoe — when I asked where her husband was, she burst into tears.
My younger sister Tina and I had always been incredibly close.
She called me about everything — bad dates, work problems, stupid arguments, even what dress she should wear to dinner.
That's why it felt so strange when, for almost a month, she barely answered any of us.
She stopped coming to family dinners, ignored most of my calls, and whenever she did text, it was always something short like, "I'm fine.
Just busy."
At first, I tried not to push.
But after three weeks, even our mom was getting worried.
Then, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, my phone rang.
It was Tina.
"Can you come get me?"
Her voice sounded strange.
"Where are you?"
She gave me an address.
"I'm at a bus stop.
Please just come."
Twenty minutes later, I pulled over and spotted her.
For a second, I thought I had the wrong person.
She was sitting alone on the bench in a white wedding dress.
Her hair was still pinned up.
Her makeup was smudged.
And in both hands, she was clutching one black man's dress shoe.
I jumped out of the car.
"What happened?"
She looked up at me and gave the saddest little smile.
"I got married."
I just stared at her.
"You what?"
"Nobody knew," she said quickly.
"I wanted to tell you.
I swear I did.
Everything happened so fast."
My head was spinning.
"You got married today?"
She nodded.
That's when I looked again at the shoe in her hands.
She was gripping it so tightly her knuckles had gone white.
"Why do you have that?"
She looked down but didn't answer.
I sat beside her.
"Who did you marry?"
Still nothing.
Then I asked:
"Where is your husband?"
Her eyes dropped to the shoe.
And she started to cry.
