Chapter 2: The Neighbor Who Knew Too Much

"Rebecca."
I spun around.
It was Diane's neighbor, Carol.
She was standing at the top of the stairs, holding a spare key of her own.
"Diane asked me to water her plants.
She's away until Thursday." Carol looked at me carefully.
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm Nathan's wife," I said.
"I have every right to be here."
Carol didn't move.
She just looked at me with an expression I couldn't quite read.
"I know who you are, honey." She paused.
"I also know what's been going on in this house."
My stomach dropped.
"What do you mean?"
Carol glanced toward Diane's bedroom door, then back at me.
"There are things in that room Nathan doesn't know Diane kept." She lowered her voice.
"Things she should have thrown away a long time ago."
"What kind of things?"
Carol shook her head slowly.
"That's not for me to say.
But if I were you…" She stepped aside and nodded toward the door.
"I'd look in the box on the top shelf of her closet."
Then she walked back downstairs without another word.
I stood there for a moment.
Then I reached for the door handle.
