Chapter 1: The Receipt in His Pocket

I found a $7,000 receipt in my husband's coat before our anniversary — then he forgot the date, so I taught him a lesson.

I stared at the receipt for a few seconds.

Then I smiled.

Our anniversary.

Of course.

So that was the surprise Nathan had been hiding.

I placed the receipt exactly where I'd found it and pretended I hadn't seen a thing.

On the morning of our anniversary, I woke up expecting...

something.

Flowers.

Breakfast.

At least a "Happy anniversary."

Instead, Nathan drank his coffee, kissed my cheek, and grabbed his keys.

"Have a good day."

I stared at him.

"That's it?"

He checked his pockets.

"Did I forget something?"

I just stared at him.

He genuinely had no idea.

That evening, Nathan came home with grocery-store flowers after I reminded him what day it was.

But there was no necklace.

So whoever he'd spent $7,000 on, it wasn't me.

A week later, we went to his mother's house for dinner.

The second Diane opened the door, my eyes went straight to her neck.

There it was.

"Oh, this?" Diane smiled, touching it.

"Nathan surprised me with it."

I looked at my husband.

He suddenly became very interested in his wine.

Then Diane laughed.

"Honestly, you've been spoiling me lately.

First the new TV, then my weekend trip, and now this..."

I slowly turned back to Nathan.

"What weekend trip?"

The next morning, I confronted him.

"Seven thousand dollars on a necklace.

A TV.

A trip.

How much money have you been spending on your mother behind my back?"

"Rebecca, don't make this into something it's not."

"Then what is it, Nathan?"

He sighed.

"She's my mother.

I help her sometimes.

There's nothing wrong with that."

"Without telling your wife?"

"It's not like I need permission to buy my mom a gift."

I turned to Diane.

She didn't even look embarrassed.

Instead, she folded her arms.

"Nathan has always taken care of me."

"He has a wife now."

Diane raised an eyebrow.

"And I'm still his mother."

"We're supposed to make financial decisions together."

She actually laughed.

"Oh, Rebecca.

You really don't understand men, do you?"

"Apparently not."

She leaned back and smiled.

"A man should always love his mother more than his wife."

I didn't argue.

By the time I got home, I knew exactly what I was going to do.

Nathan thought there was nothing wrong with spending thousands of dollars behind his wife's back.

Fine.

I was going to teach my husband a lesson he'd never forget.

And to do it, I needed to get inside his mother's house without either of them knowing.

Diane had given us a spare key to her house years ago.

So the next afternoon, I slipped it into the lock and quietly let myself inside.

The house was silent.

I went upstairs and headed straight for Diane's bedroom.

I had just reached for the door when a voice behind me said:
