Chapter 2: The Envelope With My Name On It

Part 2 — Continued below ⬇️

---

I sat.

My hands were trembling.

The pie box was still on the floor where I'd dropped it.

Henry didn't look at me right away.

He walked to the small table by the window, opened the drawer, and pulled out an envelope.

It was worn at the edges.

Like it had been handled many times.

My name was on the front.

My full name.

Written in Matt's handwriting.

"He gave this to me three weeks before he passed," Henry said quietly.

"He made me promise not to give it to you until I was sure you were ready."

"Ready?" My voice cracked.

"Ready for what?"

Henry set the envelope on the table between us.

"Matt and I served together.

Forty years ago.

We lost touch, but he found me again two years before he d*ed." He paused.

"He knew something was wrong with his health long before he told you."

The room tilted.

"He kept that from me too?"

"He was trying to protect you." Henry's voice broke.

"But there's something in that letter that goes beyond his illness.

Something he d*d that he never told you about.

Something that changes everything you think you know about your marriage."

I reached for the envelope.

Henry placed his hand gently over mine.

"Once you read it…

you can't unread it."
