Chapter 1: The Shell and the Secret

I fell in love with a 73-year-old man during my vacation — when I discovered what he was really planning, I couldn't hold back my tears.

For forty-six years, I took care of everyone except myself.

I spent most of my life looking after my husband, Matt, our three children, and later, our grandchildren.

After Matt passed away, I realized I had never truly done anything just for myself.

So at 68, I booked a month by the sea in South Carolina.

On my fourth morning there, a silver-haired man pointed at the shell in my hand.

"Keep that one," he said.

"The ugly ones usually have the best stories."

I laughed.

His name was Henry.

He was 73 and staying two buildings away.

Coffee became morning walks.

Walks became dinners on the pier, where he always pulled out my chair and ordered key lime pie because, as he said, "We're too old to lie about wanting dessert."

We talked about grown children, empty houses, bad knees, and how strange it feels to sleep on only one side of a bed after decades of marriage.

For the first time in years, I felt like a woman again, not just a wife, mother, or grandmother.

One evening, while we watched the sunset, Henry reached for my hand.

"I thought this part of my life was over."

My eyes burned.

"So did I."

By my final week, I dreaded going home.

So the night before my flight, I bought his favorite pie and went to his room without calling.

His door was slightly open.

Then I heard him speaking on the balcony.

"No.

She can't know the truth…

or what Matt made me do.

She still doesn't know we're connected, and I'm afraid the truth will destroy her."

The pie box slipped from my hands.

Matt.

My husband's name.

A name I had never once mentioned to Henry.

I pushed the door open.

Henry spun around, phone still pressed to his ear.

His face went white.

"How do you know my husband's name?"

He stared at me, then ended the call.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Henry.

Answer me."

His hand shook as he pulled out a chair.

"You have no idea what I've hidden from you," he whispered.

"Or what Matt asked me to do before he d*ed."

My knees nearly gave out.

"What did you hide?"

Henry looked at me as though the answer might destroy us both.

"You'd better sit down."

What did Matt ask Henry to do — and why was it kept secret for so long?
