Chapter 2: Four Words That Changed Everything

He opened his camera.

Then he turned it around — facing himself — and started recording.

"Say it again," he said to Ethan.

Calm.

Completely calm.

Ethan blinked.

"What?"

"What you just said about your mother.

Say it again."

People were slowing down around us.

My sister-in-law had lowered her phone.

Ethan looked at me, then back at his father.

"Dad, I was just—"

"Say.

It.

Again."

The silence lasted about three seconds.

It felt like a year.

Then my husband turned the camera toward me.

He walked over, stood right beside me, and put his arm around my shoulders.

"I want a picture with your mother," he said.

"Because she is the most beautiful woman on this promenade.

And she has been for twenty-one years."

He held the camera out.

Took the photo himself.

Then he looked back at Ethan.

"You will apologize to her.

Right now.

In front of everyone who just heard you."

Ethan's face went red.

His aunt was still watching.

A couple nearby had stopped walking.

"I'm sorry, Mom," he said.

Quiet.

Ashamed.

But my husband wasn't finished.

He looked at his son for a long moment, then said four words I didn't expect.

And those four words changed something between us — all three of us — permanently.
