Chapter 1: The Photo He Refused to Take
"I don't want a picture with mom when she looks like that," that's what my teenage son said when I asked him for one photo together — I was too exhausted to argue, but what my husband did next made him instantly regret it.
My son wouldn't stand next to me for a photograph.
Five days into the trip and I was in two pictures.
Both from the shoulders up.
We'd come up off the beach and were walking the promenade before dinner, that hour when everything goes gold and everyone's taking pictures.
My sister-in-law had been shooting all week.
She had her phone out again.
So I pushed my sunglasses up into my hair, moved my bag around behind me and called him over.
"Come here.
I want one with you."
He looked at me.
Then looked away, fast.
"Mom."
"What?"
"Nothing."
"One picture.
Come on."
He didn't move.
He started scanning the promenade like he'd just remembered somewhere he had to be.
"What is wrong with you?"
"Nothing."
My husband was standing two steps away with his own phone.
"Go stand with your mother," he said.
"Dad.
Seriously."
"What?"
And then Ethan said it.
Not under his breath.
Out loud, in front of everybody walking past.
"I don't want a picture with Mom when she looks like that."
His eyes moved down my dress while he said it.
My sister-in-law still had her phone up in the air.
I stood there with my arm out and I didn't say a word.
I looked at my husband.
And he gave me a look I recognized.
Twenty-one years.
I have never once seen that man let anything go.
Not a rude waiter.
Not a parking space.
He's a good father.
He has been from day one.
But there is a line with him, and our son had just walked straight over it in front of a street full of strangers.
He didn't raise his voice.
He didn't even step forward.
He took out his phone — and I will not forget the next ten minutes for the rest of my life.
