Chapter 3: The Message From Nowhere

Claire stared at the screen for three full seconds.
*There's something about Marcus you still don't know.
Something Chloe doesn't know either.*
She turned the phone face-down on the tray table.
Marcus was watching her.
She could feel it.
She kept her expression completely neutral and looked out the window at the tarmac still visible below.
"Who was that?" Marcus asked.
"No one you need to worry about."
He reached across the armrest.
"Claire.
Give me the phone."
She picked it up and slid it into her jacket pocket.
"No."
His jaw tightened.
The flight attendant moved through the aisle doing final checks, and Marcus sat back, recalibrating.
Claire recognized the pause.
She had seen it a hundred times across the dinner table — the moment he shifted from pressure to strategy.
Chloe had not spoken since the word *husband*.
She was looking straight ahead, her hands folded in her lap, her earlier confidence entirely gone.
Claire almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
The plane began to move.
Marcus waited until the engine noise rose before he leaned in again, his voice low and controlled.
"Whatever you think you're doing, you need to think about Maya.
A divorce — a public one — destroys her stability.
Her school.
Her friendships.
Everything she knows."
"I've thought about Maya every day for twelve years," Claire said.
"That's more than I can say for you."
"That's not fair."
"October 3rd, 9th, and 17th," Claire said.
"Were you thinking about Maya on any of those evenings?"
He said nothing.
"I didn't think so."
The seatbelt sign chimed.
Claire opened the leather folder again and removed a single page — not the photographs, not the financial records, but a printed email chain.
She set it on her knee where Marcus could see it without her offering it to him.
His eyes dropped to the page.
She watched his face.
Watched the exact moment he recognized what it was.
"Where did you get that?" he said.
His voice had changed.
"Your personal email account," Claire said.
"The one you forgot was still signed in on Maya's school iPad."
The email at the top of the chain was dated eight months ago.
The subject line read: *Re: Timeline for the transfer — final confirmation.*
It was not addressed to Chloe.
It was addressed to someone named Daniel Reeves.
Marcus's hand came down flat on his own knee.
"That is completely out of context."
"Then explain the context to me," Claire said.
"Because from where I'm sitting, it looks like you've been planning this for a very long time.
And not just with Chloe."
Chloe turned her head slowly toward Marcus.
"Who is Daniel Reeves?"
Marcus did not answer her.
The plane lifted off the ground.
Claire tucked the email back into the folder, closed it, and rested her hands on top of it.
Outside the window, Boston shrank beneath them — the harbor, the bridges, the grid of streets she had walked for twelve years.
She felt the altitude press against her chest and breathed through it steadily.
Her phone buzzed again inside her pocket.
Same unknown number.
May you like
*He's going to try to reach Daniel before you land.
Don't let him make that call.*
