Chapter 2: Seat 7C

He didn't speak.

He just stared at her like a man watching the floor disappear beneath his feet.

Chloe was already seated in 7A, her hand resting on Marcus's armrest.

She looked at Claire with polite confusion.

"I'm sorry — do you know each other?"

"Yes," Claire said, settling into 7C.

"He's my husband."

The silence that followed lasted four full seconds.

Marcus found his voice first.

"Claire.

This isn't what it looks like.

Chloe is a colleague.

We were — there was a last-minute change to the conference location and—"

"Marcus." Claire opened the leather folder on her lap.

"I have photographs of you and Chloe entering the Marlowe Hotel on October 3rd, 9th, and 17th." She turned to the first page.

"I also have a copy of the joint investment account you quietly moved into a personal account eleven days ago."

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Chloe pulled her hand back slowly.

"That money," Claire continued, her voice perfectly level, "includes the capital from my design business.

My lawyer flagged the transfer at 6 this morning."

Marcus leaned close and dropped his voice to a hiss.

"You need to stop this right now."

Claire looked at him with calm, clear eyes.

"I'm not the one who needs to stop anything."

Then her phone buzzed on her tray table.

She glanced at the screen.

It was a message from a number she didn't recognize.

*There's something about Marcus you still don't know.

Something Chloe doesn't know either.*
