Claire finally turned back to me.
Her voice was low, like she didn't want the nurses to hear.
"We paid for a boy, Marianne.
That was the agreement."
I couldn't speak for a moment.
"Paid?
Claire, I'm your sister.
There was no agreement like that.
I carried this baby out of love."
Evan stepped forward.
"There are people involved in this arrangement who expected specific results.
This isn't just about us."
"What people?" I said.
"What are you talking about?"
Neither of them answered.
The baby made a small sound against my chest.
I looked down at her — this perfect, innocent little girl — and something inside me turned to stone.
"You need to hand her over," Claire said quietly.
"We'll sort out the paperwork and move forward."
"Move forward," I repeated.
"Marianne, please don't make this harder than it needs to be."
I looked at my sister — really looked at her — and realized I was seeing someone I didn't fully recognize.
Then my phone buzzed on the bedside table.
A message.
No name.
Just a number I didn't know.
*Don't let them take her.
You don't know what they planned.*
My hands went cold.
